“Draco” she said softly, snuggling a bit closer to him under the covers
“Hmm” he answered, his arm moving around her but still he didn’t open his eyes.
“You’re not going to force me to leave Dhiaran, are you? I know my being here isn’t what you want but I wish that you could try to understand my position…” she paused, as words seemed to fail her “… If only you understood why I can’t leave then you wouldn’t ask me to go” She finished lamely. It was long moments before he spoke, his voice quiet but serious.
” I understand Hermione” he told her and she turned shocked eyes to meet his. Was he saying what she thought he was saying? That he wasn’t going to fight her about staying. Although his face was impassive, the clarity in his mercurial eyes gave her the answer and she reached up to hug him, relieved and ecstatic beyond words.
“I…” love you, was what she nearly blurted out but she caught the words before they could be expressed. Suddenly she couldn’t meet his eyes, knowing that it wouldn’t be difficult for him to see the depth of feelings that she held for him. She knew that by saying those words, everything would be irrevocably changed between them and Merlin help her but she didn’t think she was strong enough, at the moment, to face a possible negative response from him.
“What’s wrong?” he asked gently, cupping her cheek with his palm.
“Nothing” was her too quick response “…I guess I just can’t believe that you’re agreeing” she lied, hoping that he would believe that.
“That’s all?” he asked skeptically
“That’s all” she confirmed, looking at him steadily. He did not believe her, she could see it in his questioning eyes. After what seemed like an eternity of silence he finally nodded imperceptibly and she knew that this was his way of saying that he wouldn’t pursue it. She gratefully put her head on his chest and closed her eyes, all the while trying to control her panicked heart rate.
“You are to stay on the camp at all times unless it comes under attack. This is not optional” he spoke after a moment and there was no mistaking the authority in his tone.
Normally, she would have bristled at this but it was time for her to reciprocate and understand his position. Today he had left a mission, without his men, without any thought for his own safety in order to ensure her safety. To say that his actions were extremely dangerous would be an understatement and she knew that if any harm came to him, especially because of her, she would forever be tormented.
“Okay” she whispered, raising her head again to meet his unfathomable gaze. No more words were spoken between but when he pulled her closer to him and rested his head on hers, she new he was relieved that she had agreed.
Draco Malfoy looked up from The Daily Prophet he was reading to find Hermione Granger standing in front of him, looking quite frightening with her so-called sex hair as a result of last night.
“Yes, Granger?” he responded.
“You don’t love me, right?” asked Hermione.
The abrupt question surprised him. No, he did not love her. His wants and desires and urges to kiss her and touch her and hold her were nothing more than desire and lust.
Yes, the feelings he felt towards the girl meant nothing. Absolutely nothing.
Someone had once said that if you told yourself the same thing enough times, you would actually begin to believe yourself.
“No,” he replied.
He saw her chest rise as she took a deep breath.
“Good,” said Hermione. “Now I want you to do me a favor.”
Draco’s eyebrows collided in confusion.
“Now what might that be?” he asked.
She held out her wand to him. “I want you to erase my memories,” she stated simply.
This time, Draco didn’t even bother trying to hide his surprise.
“What?” he cried in astonishment.
“You heard me,” Hermione said. “Erase my memories.”
“Now now, Granger,” said Draco, shaking his head. “I don’t think this is a good idea. Maybe you need some more sleep or something, we did stay up awfully late last night…” his voice trailed off.
“Yes it is,” she replied. “It is,” she repeated, this time more confident.
“Why?” He couldn’t help but ask. Was it his fault? Was he no longer good in bed?
“I’m tired of it, Malfoy,” she explained. “I’m tired of living with this guilt. Everyday, I remember what I’ve done. Everyday, I remember how many people I’ve hurt, how many I’ve killed.”
She looked into his eyes. “Draco,” she said, his first name sounding foreign on her lips, “aren’t we just as bad as them? They called us the ‘Light side’, but didn’t we do the same things they did? Draco, have you seen the new history books that they have in Hogwarts? They make it sound as if we’re saints, or something. They called us heroic.” She let out a hollow laugh. “No more, Draco. I can’t live like this anymore.”
He looked back into her eyes, considering.
“Malfoy. Remember what you said. You don’t love me.”
He sighed in defeat and took the wand from her hand. Anything was better than letting her know the truth.
Unable to resist his urges for one of the first times in his life, he gently leaned down and pressed his lips together with hers.
“So you’ll have something pleasant to remember me by,” he explained in her ear.
“Remember, I don’t love you, Granger,” he added.
“I will,” she replied.
“Alright,” he breathed. “I just point at your head and say obliviate, right?” He had seen the spell performed before, but had never done it himself.
She nodded in response.
He pressed his lips together in a thin line.
He slowly lifted the wand towards her head, and after what seemed like hours, the point of her wand met her forehead.
They both took a deep breath.
“Goodbye, Granger,” he said, fighting back tears.
“Goodbye, Malfoy,” she replied. “Thank you.”
“Don’t thank me.”
He inhaled deeply, and let out all his air in one loud whoosh.
He had never been strong enough.

“Well look who we have here,” you could hear the smirk in his voice.
“Oh bother,” Hermione muttered to herself. She couldn’t help but roll her eyes humorously as she heard that familiar drawl.
Harry was already heading straight for the source, Draco Malfoy. He was surrounded by his posse of brainless goons. Hermione stood a few feet behind Harry, listening to the argument at hand. “Don’t make me wipe that grin off your face myself, Malfoy,” Harry started. Harry rarely resorted to violence, maybe a few childish hexes here and there but she never thought that Harry was type to throw a punches.
“I’d like to see you try, Potter,” Malfoy spat out his name, raising his voice. Hermione’s eyes widened, ‘Clash of the egos,’ she thought to herself as she began to walk toward them. Ron was already beside Harry, egging him on.
“We’d paint the ground with your smirk, ferret,” Ron snapped.
Alarm bells went off in Hermione’s brain, the boys seemed very restless and angry today, she had to be ready for anything. As soon as that thought crossed her mind, Hermione watched in slow motion as Harry and Malfoy started off towards each other.
Before a knife fight broke out or something worse, like a professor catching them and throwing them into detention. Hermione had already placed herself in between Malfoy and Harry, “What in Merlin’s name are you boys doing? Apparently, I’m the only one who has matured over the years,” she scoffed and turned her attention to Harry, narrowing her eyes, “Cut it out.”
“Aw, look, Granger has come to save you from further embarrassment, Potter,” Malfoy grinned like a Cheshire cat. Hermione flushed, “Shut the hell up, Malfoy,” she finished before wrapping her petite arm around him and dragging him away.
“Look whose saving who now,” Ron said with a laugh.
Draco didn’t even bother to respond, nor even acknowledge their presence any longer. He turned his attention to Hermione and brought his mouth close to her ear.
“Thanks, Granger,” he whispered, his warm breath making her ear tingle. Hermione looked up at him and watched as a small, secret smile played on his lips for her. Hermione could feel her face turning a deep scarlet.
“I’m not always going to be here to save your arse, Draco,” she responded with one of her own brilliant smiles as she turned and walked back towards her friends.
